The following photos were taken during a month long vacation in North Carolina during May of 2005. All were taken using my Olympus D-550 Zoom digital camera. It is a dated 3.0 megapixel camera, but still is capable of getting some really nice photos.

Suicidal Moth Before Death
Suicidal Moth Under the Mac
This moth made a suicidal dive at my Mac and became wedged head first under the bottom handle. Possibly thanks to recent knowledge, I believe this is a male moth as the antenna are covered with additional receptors.

In the dewy morning before leaving for New York, I noticed a mantis on the hood of my car. I took a series of photos before Al came out to help take more. I got out my film camera to take some high quality pictures (not online yet).

One of the funniest parts was when I was trying to use the film camera and Al had the digital camera. The mantis lept on to the digital camera and I managed to take a few shots of the guy on the digital camera.

By some odd chance, we actually got a U-Haul trailor which featured the name of the city we were in, one of my favorite places to be too.

On the return North to New York, I stopped at a gas station in either North Carolina or Virginia. The summer night sky was swarming with bugs. I noticed this moth sitting next to the gas pump. Amazed by its appearance and size, I had to snap some photos.

This moth looked like it was lifeless. I noticed it was missing an antenna as well, perhaps it was just stunned after hitting something.

Flying Ant

Flying Ant
When I was a child, I would play with ants. I distintly remember in my past seeing ants with wings. I hadn't seen a flying ant in about 20 years, so naturally, I was quite excited when one flew in to my house.

I trapped it in a spent Freihoffer's Chocolate Chip Cookie box. After it calmed down and adjusted to being entrapped, I opened the lid and snapped a mess of photos to prove that flying ants were not the figment of a childhood memory!
